Why is Actor-Politician Vijay Back in CBI's Spotlight? Latest Developments in the Karur Stampede Case

Vijay Summoned Again by CBI

Actor and political leader Vijay, who heads the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has received another summons from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He is expected to appear before the agency in New Delhi on Tuesday as part of the ongoing investigation into the tragic stampede that occurred during his rally in Karur in September 2025.

This latest request for his presence comes amid growing speculation in Tamil Nadu's political landscape regarding potential alliance discussions between the BJP and Vijay's party ahead of the forthcoming Assembly elections.

According to insiders, the CBI is keen to question Vijay further as part of its inquiry into the unfortunate incident that resulted in multiple fatalities and numerous injuries, raising serious concerns about crowd control and safety measures during the event.

Earlier this year, Vijay had already been interrogated by the CBI on two occasions. His first appearance was on January 12, where he spent over six hours providing his statement to investigators.

During that session, officials sought information about the rally's planning, the permissions secured, and the crowd management strategies that were implemented.

He returned for a second questioning on January 19, where he reportedly informed investigators that the insufficient police presence at the venue played a crucial role in the ensuing chaos that led to the stampede.

Vijay emphasized that the arrangements made by the authorities were inadequate given the size of the crowd expected at the rally.

Investigators also inquired whether the police guidelines for public gatherings had been adhered to during the event.

As part of the investigation, he provided documents related to the rally, including the permission application and correspondence with local officials.

The CBI took over the case from a Special Investigation Team (SIT) following a Supreme Court directive for an independent investigation.

This order was issued after a petition from TVK, which sought a thorough and unbiased inquiry into the events leading to the tragedy.

Sources suggest that this upcoming questioning might be the final interaction between Vijay and the CBI regarding this case, although the agency may still pursue additional witnesses and evidence as part of the broader investigation.
