Why Ed Sheeran Abandoned His Phone: A Journey from Lawsuits to New Music
Ed Sheeran's Phone-Free Life and Its Musical Impact
Los Angeles: Ed Sheeran recently revealed the motivations behind his decision to stop using a mobile phone, a choice that has significantly influenced his songwriting. The acclaimed artist has opted for email as his primary means of communication instead of texting.
During a performance at Sydney’s Accor Stadium as part of his Loop Tour, the 34-year-old musician discussed the aftermath of his 2015 copyright lawsuit involving Marvin Gaye's song, which concluded in his favor. He noted that this legal experience fundamentally altered his communication habits.
Sheeran shared with the audience, "If you’ve seen my name in the news over the past decade, it’s likely due to a lawsuit. I was accused of copying someone else's song, and since I hadn’t done anything wrong, I had to go to court to prove my innocence."
As part of the legal proceedings, he had to surrender his electronic devices for examination by investigators, as reported by a media outlet.
He humorously remarked, "I’m just relieved there’s nothing embarrassing on them, you know?"
Since the lawsuit, Sheeran has not used a mobile phone, having turned it off during his 2015 tour in Australia and never reactivating it.
Reflecting on that decision, he said, "At the end of that tour, I thought, ‘I don’t want to use a mobile phone again.’ I transitioned to email and have stuck with it ever since."
When the phone was later requested as evidence, he described the experience of turning it back on as akin to stepping into a time capsule.
He elaborated, "When I powered it up for the lawsuit, it felt like a time machine, taking me back to 2015 and even to 2007, when I first started texting on that number. It was surreal. I felt frozen in time."
This experience inspired his new song, "Old Phone," which he performed live for the audience and is set to feature on his upcoming album, Play, scheduled for release in 2025.
Sheeran explained that transforming challenging experiences into music has always been his method of coping with life’s ups and downs.
He stated, "Whenever something negative occurs, I write a song about it, which helps me make sense of that situation. The same goes for positive experiences. Any song you hear from me reflects intense emotions, whether they are high or low. I find that good songs often emerge from tough days."
