Bhubaneswar has become a vibrant hub for theatre, especially among the youth, who are increasingly finding their voices through this expressive medium. On the occasion of World Theatre Day, discussions with key figures in the theatre community revealed the reasons behind this growing interest.
Abhinna Routray, a seasoned actor and director, noted a significant trend: "The youth today are deeply invested in theatre. Our workshops are filled with eager participants, indicating a bright future ahead." He highlighted that theatre is not just about acting; it cultivates vital life skills like confidence, empathy, and discipline. However, he voiced concerns about the lack of national recognition for Odia theatre.
Award-winning director Satya Jena echoed these thoughts, emphasizing the foundational role of theatre in acting. "The stage is where young talents learn the basics of performance," he remarked. He also called for improved infrastructure, including more auditoriums, and ongoing government support to help the art thrive.
Chittaranjan Satpathy, a veteran in the field, shared insights on the dynamic nature of theatre. "It communicates through various forms—gesture, speech, music, and movement. Theatre is ever-evolving and will never disappear," he stated. He countered the belief that theatre is in decline, noting that performances are frequently staged throughout Odisha. He also emphasized the need to support emerging playwrights to enhance the art's reach.
Reflecting on his own experiences, film personality Dipanwit Das Mohapatra discussed the grounding impact of theatre. "It instills truth, discipline, and mindfulness in every moment," he explained. He believes that for today's youth, theatre acts as both a training ground and a platform for fearless expression, where stories are authentic and voices are bold. Despite their diverse viewpoints, all participants agreed on one key point: theatre transcends mere performance; it is a vital space for talent development, cultural expression, and a beacon for future storytellers.
