Ashutosh Gowariker Takes the Helm at IFFI 2024
Mumbai: Renowned filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker has been named the Festival Director for the upcoming 57th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), set to take place in Goa.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting made the announcement regarding his new role on Friday.
Gowariker is celebrated for his direction of iconic films such as Lagaan, Swades, and Jodhaa Akbar, which are recognized for their compelling narratives, historical significance, and social commentary.
Lagaan notably received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, although it ultimately lost to the Bosnian film ‘No Man’s Land’.
Expressing his excitement about the festival, Gowariker stated, “It fills me with immense pride and joy to take on the role of Festival Director for the esteemed 57th International Film Festival of India in Goa. Having attended the festival since 1984 and being involved over the years, culminating in my role as Jury President for International Cinema in 2024, I feel privileged.”
He added, “Continuing the legacy that has been cultivated since 1952 by countless festival teams is a significant honor, and I embrace this renewed sense of responsibility. I eagerly anticipate collaborating closely with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting and the Government of Goa.”
Established in 1952, the International Film Festival of India is one of Asia's leading film festivals, providing a vital platform for showcasing outstanding global cinema and fostering cultural exchange.
Additionally, Gowariker has previously served as the chairperson of the Feature Film Jury for the 71st National Film Awards.
