Academy Invites New Members Ahead of Oscars
The Oscars season is approaching, and in anticipation, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended invitations to 529 individuals from the film industry to join its ranks. According to the official announcement, this year's group includes 21 award winners and three individuals honored with the Scientific and Technical Award. Those who accept their invitations will gain eligibility for Academy membership. Among the notable invitees is acclaimed filmmaker from Hindi cinema, Vishal Bhardwaj, recognized in the music category for his work on Crazxy and Gustaakh Ishq.
Vishal Bhardwaj's Invitation to the Academy
In addition to Vishal, no other prominent names from Bollywood are included in this year's list. Other celebrities who received invitations are Teyana Taylor, Josh O’Connor, Jenna Ortega, Jacob Elordi, and Simu Liu. The list also features Anthony Ramos, Bill Skarsgård, Mia Goth, Jon Bernthal, Jemaine Clement, Sopé Dìrísù, and Stephen Fry, along with filmmakers Josh and Benny Safdie, director Zach Cregger, and filmmaker Oliver Laxe.
Understanding the Academy Membership Process
The membership process for the Academy, as detailed on their website, is based on sponsorship rather than a formal application. Nominees are automatically considered for membership in the year they are nominated, eliminating the need for sponsors. The evaluation of candidates is conducted by branch executive committees, whose recommendations are then reviewed by the Membership Committee before being presented to the Board of Governors for final approval. The selection criteria focus on professional qualifications, with a strong emphasis on representation, inclusion, and equity. Notably, 42 percent of this year's invitees are women, 56 percent come from underrepresented communities, and 53 percent represent 60 countries and territories outside the U.S.
Vishal Bhardwaj's Musical Journey
Before making his mark as a filmmaker, Vishal Bhardwaj began his career working with Gulzar, contributing to the Hindi adaptation of The Jungle Book by creating the beloved title song Jungle Jungle Baat Chali Hai, which resonated with children. He made his debut as a music composer with Abhay (1995), but it was his work on Maachis (1996) that solidified his reputation as one of Bollywood's most innovative composers. Following this success, he composed music for films like Satya (1998), Chachi 420 (1997), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Godmother (1999), and Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001), with Godmother winning the National Film Award for Best Music Direction. Even after transitioning to directing, he continued to create music for his films, including Omkara, Maqbool, and Haider.
