What Led to Anurag Kashyap's Bailable Warrant? A Deep Dive into the Controversy
Court Issues Bailable Warrant Against Anurag Kashyap
A Surat city court has issued a bailable warrant for filmmaker Anurag Kashyap after he failed to attend scheduled court proceedings. This legal action arises from accusations concerning derogatory comments he allegedly made on social media aimed at the Brahmin community back in April 2025.
On Monday, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate JV Chauhan issued the warrant, with the next hearing set for December 24. This decision came after Kashyap's repeated absences, despite multiple summonses, including a public notice published in a local newspaper.
Background of the Legal Case
Legal Proceedings and Background
The legal proceedings commenced in May when the court mandated the registration of a case against Kashyap under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include promoting enmity between groups, intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of peace, and spreading false rumors. These actions were initiated following a complaint from lawyer Kamlesh Raval, who serves as a legal advisor to groups such as Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
The controversy reportedly began with a post on X, where Kashyap allegedly made offensive remarks about the Brahmin community. This post was a reaction to objections raised by the Akhil Bharatiya Brahmin Samaj and Vipra Sena regarding the trailer for his film, Phule. The petitioner claimed that Kashyap's comments were designed to insult the community and could incite hostility among different social groups.
Kashyap's Apology and Ongoing Legal Matters
Response and Current Status
After facing backlash in April 2025, Kashyap publicly apologized on Instagram. He admitted to crossing a line by using inappropriate language in response to a social media user and expressed regret to his family, friends, and the Brahmin community for his remarks.
Despite his apology, the legal proceedings have continued. Complainant Kamlesh Raval pointed out that the court had tried various methods to ensure Kashyap's attendance, including issuing a public summons, before resorting to the bailable warrant. This type of warrant allows the accused to secure their release by paying the bail amount set by the court. Currently, the case remains pending, with the next court appearance scheduled for late December.
