Vijay Sethupathi's Latest Film 'Ace' Falls Flat: A Critical Review

A Disappointing Turn for Vijay Sethupathi
Vijay Sethupathi is an actor who enjoys widespread admiration and respect. While he has made some missteps in his career, none are deemed irredeemable. However, his latest film, 'Ace,' might be a moment he regrets when his children eventually view it. One has to wonder what led him to accept a role in such a mindless comedy.
In various discussions, Vijay has emphasized the importance of merging entertainment with socially relevant themes in his films.
Yet, 'Ace' seems to lack both entertainment value and a meaningful message. The film feels as flat as a pancake, meandering when it should be advancing the plot and dragging on when it should be moving forward. It embodies a case where a lack of substance is mistaken for style and creative void is confused with improvisation.
Seeing Sethupathi caught in this whirlwind of absurdity serves as a reminder that even the most talented actors need to believe in their projects. It would take a miracle for any performer to find conviction in what writer-director Arumuga Kumar presents in 'Ace.'
The film features a cast of ridiculous characters who seem to belong in a circus, stumbling around in an attempt to be humorous and relevant. The setting for this folly is Malaysia, where Kannan (played by Sethupathi) is paired with Arivu (Yogi Babu), who serves as both the plot's catalyst and comic relief.
The film is rife with jokes that poke fun at the characters, particularly targeting the not-so-handsome protagonist. Kannan appears to be both an accomplice and a distant observer of the film's chaotic narrative.
Sethupathi's character has two lackluster love interests: Kalpana (Divya Pillai), who operates a restaurant, and Rukku (Rukini Vasanth), a salesgirl. Both women are portrayed as independent but financially struggling.
In a desperate bid to help them, Kannan resorts to playing poker to settle their debts but ultimately fails. His next move? A bank robbery.
This is the extent to which the writing descends. Watching a thoughtful actor like Vijay Sethupathi engage in such morally questionable actions raises questions about his choices. One can only hope the financial compensation was worthwhile, as nothing else in this film is.
