Vignesh Shivan's Insights on Film Performance

Filmmaker Vignesh Shivan is recognized for his candid views on the entertainment industry. Recently, he expressed his thoughts regarding the disappointing box office performance of his latest film, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK). In a detailed note, he mentioned that many viewers opted to watch the film on OTT platforms and later regretted not seeing it in theaters, influenced by the negative reviews circulating online. He believes that harsh criticism can deter audiences from giving films a fair shot at the box office.

Vignesh Shivan Discusses LIK’s Box Office Challenges

The film, directed by Vignesh Shivan, struggled at the box office, reportedly made with a budget of Rs 190 crore but only managing to earn Rs 66 crore. Featuring Pradeep Ranganathan, SJ Suryah, and Krithi Shetty in leading roles, Love Insurance Kompany was made available on Amazon Prime Video earlier this month, where it surprisingly garnered a positive reception from viewers. In his Instagram story, Vignesh revealed that he received numerous messages from fans expressing their regret for not watching the film in theaters due to the overwhelming negativity surrounding it.

According to Nayanthara’s husband, while some films can withstand negative reviews, others cannot. He pointed out that the lack of support from the industry and influential figures can significantly alter public perception and impact a film's success. In his note, he stated, “Reviews intended to showcase intelligence or superiority often do more than critique a film – they can dissuade audiences from giving it a chance and crush the aspirations of passionate filmmakers.” Furthermore, Vignesh admitted that he is still grappling with the disappointing box office outcome of LIK. He feels disheartened by how quickly the narrative shifted after an encouraging opening weekend, emphasizing that genuine Tamil films deserve more appreciation from audiences. He believes that people often overlook the challenges involved in bringing a film to fruition, making the final outcome particularly painful for him. He also shared a poignant remark from a renowned director: “The success of a film is often determined more by what surrounds it than by what exists within it.”
