Vaazha 2 Faces Controversy Amidst Box Office Success
Vaazha 2 Sparks Controversy Over Ayurveda Representation
The film Vaazha 2 is currently enjoying a successful run in theaters but has recently come under fire due to a scene that allegedly misrepresents Ayurveda practices. The controversy revolves around a depiction involving arishtam, which some Ayurveda practitioners claim distorts traditional medicinal practices. The Ayurveda Medical Association of India (AMAI) has reportedly announced intentions to pursue legal action, asserting that the scene could mislead the public regarding Ayurvedic treatments.
AMAI's Legal Action Against Vaazha 2
Despite its box office achievements, Vaazha 2 has become embroiled in controversy. The film features a character played by Biju Kuttan, which allegedly links a medical condition to the use of arishtam, a traditional Ayurvedic concoction. This portrayal has drawn criticism from some members of the Ayurveda community, who argue that it misrepresents genuine medical practices.
The AMAI has taken a firm stance against the film, claiming that the controversial scene conveys a misleading narrative about Ayurveda, potentially confusing the audience regarding traditional treatment methods. They have expressed their intention to initiate legal proceedings against the film's creators. However, the filmmakers have yet to provide any official statement or response regarding the issue.
Vaazha 2's Box Office Performance
Interestingly, the ongoing controversy has not hindered the film's commercial success. Vaazha 2 continues to perform well at the box office, reportedly earning nearly Rs 99.35 crore in net earnings in India, with a worldwide gross exceeding Rs 191 crore. The film has maintained steady occupancy rates even in its second week.
Within just 15 days of its release on April 2, Vaazha 2 has surpassed Rs 100 crore at the Kerala box office, a milestone confirmed by the filmmakers via social media on Friday. This achievement marks one of the most impressive box office runs in recent Malayalam cinema.
The sequel has also set a record as the fastest film to reach this benchmark, outpacing the Mohanlal-starrer Thudarum, which took 19 days, and Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Lokah Chapter 1 Chandra, which achieved it in 24 days. Directed by Savin S A and penned by Vipin Das, the film features a blend of social media influencers and well-known actors, including Alphonse Puthren, Aju Varghese, Vijay Babu, and Sudheesh. The creators have already announced a third installment, Vaazha 3, which is expected to focus on female characters and has been described as a “biopic of one billion girls,” directed by Vishnu Sreejith.
