Minister's Response to the Controversy

Mumbai: Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, has addressed the ongoing controversy regarding Nora Fatehi's song 'Sarke Chunar Teri Sarke'.

During a session in Lok Sabha on Wednesday, he emphasized that freedom of speech must align with cultural and societal norms.

Vaishnaw stated that while freedom of expression is vital, it is not without limitations.

He remarked, “The song referenced by the Member of Parliament has already faced a ban. I want to make it clear to the House that freedom of speech should adhere to the reasonable restrictions set forth by the Constitution of India. It cannot be absolute and must be contextualized within society.”

He further elaborated, “It should also reflect cultural values. Given the rapid dissemination of content through digital platforms today, the government is prepared to take stringent measures to safeguard society, particularly to protect children, women, and marginalized groups.”

The controversy surrounding Nora Fatehi's song stems from its inclusion in the film KD: The Devil. Following its release, the track faced significant criticism for its perceived vulgar lyrics and suggestive dance moves. Notably, singer Armaan Malik described the lyrics as a 'new low', while many social media users deemed the content unsuitable.

The situation intensified with legal actions aimed at banning the song, citing its potential negative influence on minors and public morality. In response to the escalating backlash, the producers reportedly removed the song from YouTube, highlighting the ongoing struggle between artistic freedom and societal expectations in Indian music.
