Shilpa Shinde's recent revelation about her unfounded sexual harassment allegations against Sanjay Kohli, the producer of Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain, has ignited considerable controversy in the television sector. The former Bigg Boss season 11 winner has faced backlash from various industry figures, including Hina Khan and the All Indian Cine Workers Association, who have openly criticized her actions. Shilpa, who played Angoori Bhabhi from 2015 to 2016, has made a return to the show. In a podcast with Bharti Singh, she elaborated on the reasons behind her false claims.
Conflict with the Production Team
Shilpa's allegations trace back to 2016, when she left the show at its peak, having joined after Rashami Desai's unexpected exit. She claims her issues with Edit II Productions began when they allegedly asked her to sign a restrictive contract that would prevent her from taking on other roles. Shilpa accused Binaifer and Sanjay Kohli of causing her mental distress, asserting that they were spreading false narratives about her conduct on set.
Claims of Favoritism
Shortly thereafter, Shilpa accused the creators of Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain of favoritism towards her co-star Saumya Tandon, who played Anita Bhabhi. In interviews, Shinde noted that Tandon was allowed to bring her own costume designer and hairdresser, while she had to request such privileges. Shilpa claimed that after discussing this with Saumya, the latter informed Binaifer, leading to her dismissal from the show.
Response from the Production House
In response, Edit II Productions stated that there were signs of Shilpa considering another show, which would breach her contract. They disputed her claims of being unable to work due to migraines and labeled her as unprofessional for repeatedly violating rules, despite having increased her salary twice.
Legal Actions Taken by Shilpa Shinde
In 2017, Shilpa filed a criminal defamation suit against several industry figures, including Harry Baweja and Dilip Pithva, with the help of her lawyer, Ninad Majumdar. She was in talks to join The Kapil Sharma Show but lost the opportunity due to a ban from these organizations.
Allegations of Sexual Harassment
That same year, Shilpa lodged an FIR against Sanjay Kohli, alleging sexual harassment. Her complaint detailed inappropriate behavior and threats of removal from the show if she did not comply with his demands.
Withdrawal of the Case
In 2018, Shilpa withdrew her case and resolved the matter, stating that producers and fellow actors encouraged her to settle. She mentioned that her payment for three months of work had been finalized. Shilpa made her return to Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain in 2025 after Shubhangi left the show, expressing her affection for the character.
Shilpa Shinde's Confession
A decade later, during the podcast, Shilpa confessed that her false sexual harassment allegation against Sanjay stemmed from feeling she had no other choice due to payment disputes. Following her admission, Hina Khan criticized her on Instagram, addressing the Prime Minister and other officials, advocating for leniency towards those who acknowledge their past mistakes. Hina and Shilpa have had a contentious relationship since their time on Bigg Boss 11.
The All Indian Cine Workers Association has called on Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to conduct a thorough investigation into Shilpa's allegations, labeling them a serious concern for the Bollywood and television industry. Shilpa has yet to respond to the AICWA's recent statement.
