Heartstopper Forever Set for 2026 Release

The upcoming film Heartstopper Forever, scheduled to premiere on Netflix in 2026, will feature some notable changes. The character of Sarah Nelson, Nick's mother, has been recast, with Anna Maxwell Martin stepping in for Olivia Colman. Additionally, Alice Oseman, the creator and writer, has confirmed that veteran actor Derek Jacobi will make a cameo appearance. The film will continue the love story of Nick, played by Kit Connor, and Charlie, portrayed by Joe Locke. The series originally debuted on April 22, 2022, and has completed three seasons.

Olivia Colman's Departure and New Casting

Anna Maxwell Martin Takes Over as Sarah Nelson

It has been confirmed that Olivia Colman will not reprise her role as Sarah Nelson in the film. She last appeared in Season 2 of Heartstopper but could not participate in Season 3 due to scheduling conflicts. To explain her absence, the show introduced Sarah's sister, Diane, played by Haley Atwell. However, for the film, Sarah's character is essential to the narrative. Oseman explained that they chose to recast rather than omit Sarah, as she plays a crucial role in supporting her son during his coming-out journey in the first season's finale. Both Connor and Colman received Children's and Family Emmy Awards for their performances.

Oseman's Insights on the Recasting

In an interview with Tudum, Oseman expressed that it would have been illogical for Sarah to be absent in this concluding chapter, especially given the emotional challenges Nick faces. They expressed gratitude for Colman's portrayal of Sarah, acknowledging her popularity among fans. However, Oseman reassured viewers that Martin captures Sarah's essence beautifully, bringing a grounded energy to the character. Furthermore, Jacobi's cameo is anticipated, likely portraying one half of an elderly gay couple who frequent the café where Charlie works.

Familiar Faces Join the Final Film

Despite the disappointment over Colman's absence, many familiar faces will return for Heartstopper Forever. Alongside Connor and Locke, the cast will include Yasmin Finney, Will Gao, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell, Tobie Donovan, Rhea Norwood, Jenny Walser, Fisayo Akinade, Nima Taleghani, Leila Khan, Bradley Riches, Darragh Hand, and Eddie Marsan, all reprising their roles. The screenplay is penned by Oseman, while Wash Westmoreland will direct the film. Connor and Locke have also taken on executive producer roles, collaborating with Oseman, Euros Lyn (director of Seasons 1 and 2), Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman.
