Remembering R. Nallakannu: A Life of Service


Renowned figures like Rajinikanth and Vijay were among the first to honor R. Nallakannu, a 101-year-old freedom fighter and esteemed leader of the Communist Party of India, who passed away in Chennai on February 25, 2026. Nallakannu was celebrated for his lifelong advocacy for farmers’ rights and social justice, and he was the last surviving member of the historic Nellai Conspiracy Case. His death elicited heartfelt tributes from both political leaders and film personalities, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. He is survived by his two daughters, Andal and Kasi Bharathi, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of activism and commitment to the people of Tamil Nadu.

According to hospital officials, Nallakannu's health had seen fluctuations in the days leading up to his passing. Despite the diligent efforts of a team of medical professionals, his condition deteriorated, leading to organ failure. He passed away at 1:55 p.m., leaving a significant impact on political causes in Tamil Nadu. The news of his passing prompted tributes from notable figures in the Tamil film industry. Superstar Rajinikanth expressed profound sadness, emphasizing Nallakannu's lasting contributions to the state.



It is important to note that Rajinikanth, known for his role in Coolie, is not currently leading any political party. He had initially intended to establish a party for the 2021 Tamil Nadu assembly elections but withdrew in December 2020 due to health issues. Subsequently, he also disbanded his fan organization, the Rajini Makkal Mandram (RMM). Regarding Rajinikanth's potential political involvement, Nallakannu had remarked that while anyone can enter politics in a democracy, there are still questions about Rajinikanth's ideological beliefs and his stance on critical issues like the Cauvery water dispute and the plight of Tamils in Sri Lanka.


Thalapathy Vijay, the leader of TVK, also expressed his sorrow over Nallakannu's passing, commending his lifelong commitment to farmers’ rights and social welfare. Earlier, actor Sivakarthikeyan had celebrated Nallakannu's 100th birthday in 2025, sharing photos and admiration for the centenarian's dedication to public service.



Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin paid tribute to Nallakannu, announcing that he would receive full state honors at his funeral. Nallakannu's significant influence in the Communist movement, particularly his advocacy for farmers and marginalized communities, was recognized by leaders and party members throughout the state. Vijay, who was personally concerned about Nallakannu's health, had been in touch with the family and party officials to ensure he received proper care during his final days.


Nallakannu's life was marked by over a century of activism and dedication to public causes. From his early involvement in the independence movement to decades of service within the Communist Party of India, he became a symbol of resilience and unwavering commitment to social justice.
