Concert Tragedy in Mumbai

The Italian techno duo known as 999999999, or 9x9, recently held a performance at the NESCO Exhibition Centre located in Goregaon East, Mumbai. Unfortunately, the event took a tragic turn when two MBA students reportedly died due to a suspected drug overdose. A 28-year-old male and a 24-year-old female are believed to have succumbed after ingesting MDMA. Additionally, a 25-year-old woman from the same group is currently in critical condition at a local hospital. In response to the incident, law enforcement has detained the event organizer, the head of security, and three other individuals linked to the drug-related case. A college student accused of distributing the drugs has also been apprehended, along with the alleged supplier.

Details of the Incident

On the night of April 11, approximately 25 students from a well-known college in South Mumbai attended the 999999999 concert. During the event, a yellow pill, suspected to be MDMA, was reportedly shared among attendees. While they were enjoying the music, some individuals began to experience symptoms such as breathlessness, dizziness, and cramps around 12:30 am. The two women were subsequently rushed to a hospital in Jogeshwari East, but they were unable to provide statements due to their condition. The male victim was pronounced dead at a Goregaon West hospital on Sunday morning, and later that day, one of the women also passed away.

Survivor's Account

A survivor from the group reported that a classmate had given her the pill, claiming that others had also taken similar substances. She could not remember the events following her consumption of the pill but noted that everything seemed fine until she last saw her friend while they were dancing. The survivor described the substance as resembling Ecstasy, which she had encountered at previous events.

Ongoing Police Investigation

Authorities have detained several individuals in connection with the incident, including a college student accused of drug distribution, an event organizer, a venue management official, a security staff member, and another student believed to be the supplier. These arrests occurred on Monday, and the suspects are currently in police custody. Preliminary investigations indicate that the substance consumed was likely MDMA, a synthetic drug commonly referred to as ecstasy or molly. Reports suggest that the drugs were distributed within the venue, and the event organizers failed to prevent substance use. Additionally, it has been reported that alcohol was served to underage individuals without the necessary permits.

Statement from NESCO

A spokesperson for the venue expressed condolences to those affected and acknowledged the seriousness of the situation. They assured that full cooperation would be extended to the authorities during the investigation, stating, "We are providing all relevant information and assistance to ensure that the facts are established promptly." They further mentioned that it would be inappropriate to comment further while the investigation is ongoing, emphasizing their commitment to safety and compliance standards.
