Michael Gledhill has been arrested and charged with the murder of actor James Handy, recognized for his performances in films like "Jumanji" and "Top Gun: Maverick." The tragic event unfolded on Wednesday when authorities found the 81-year-old Handy unconscious outside his residence in Los Angeles, suffering from a stab wound to the chest. Despite immediate medical attention, Handy was declared dead shortly after reaching the hospital, prompting a rapid investigation that culminated in Gledhill's arrest.

During a recent court appearance at the Los Angeles Superior Court, Gledhill was absent, and no plea was entered on his behalf. Judge John H. Reid mandated a mental competency evaluation for Gledhill, ordering him to be assessed in mental health court. A subsequent judge will determine his fitness for trial based on these evaluations.

Gledhill's attorney, Javier Trincado, noted that the sheriff's department chose not to transport Gledhill to the hearing, without providing a reason. Trincado remained in court for other proceedings and could not comment further on the case. Reports indicate that Gledhill has been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has faced considerable mental health issues, as revealed by his mother, Wendy Gledhill.

Wendy Gledhill expressed her grief over the situation in a statement to the media, offering condolences to Handy's family. She described her son as increasingly paranoid and mentioned that he had ceased taking his prescribed medication shortly before the incident. When asked about the potential for Michael to spend life in prison, she remarked that he should not pose a danger to others.

Authorities disclosed that Gledhill was taken into custody after he allegedly admitted to being the person sought by law enforcement. A disturbing 911 call was made, in which the caller stated, "I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin." Gledhill, who is the son of Handy's girlfriend and lives with his mother, has been booked on suspicion of murder, with bail set at $2 million. Handy, a veteran character actor, had an extensive career in both film and television, featuring in numerous crime dramas and significant films throughout the years.
