Tovino Thomas Stands Up for Students' Right to Protest
Tovino Thomas Condemns Police Action Against Student Protesters
Renowned Malayalam actor Tovino Thomas has voiced his strong disapproval of the alleged force used against students during a peaceful demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on July 20. The star of 'Minnal Murali' emphasized that the right to dissent is a cornerstone of democracy. In a poignant message shared on social media, he expressed concern over the treatment of the protesters and showed his support for those advocating for their beliefs.
Tovino's remarks come in the wake of significant public outrage regarding reports of police action against students during the protest. Without targeting any specific political party or organization, he highlighted the broader themes of democracy, humanity, and the importance of peaceful protests. He stated, "While perspectives on right and wrong may vary, this is certainly NOT the appropriate response to a peaceful protest." He further argued that silencing the youth—who represent the nation's future—through force undermines democracy itself.
He continued, "When the younger generation raises their voices, and they are met with oppressive force, it is not just their future that is being suppressed, but faith in democracy itself is eroded." Tovino also questioned the rationale behind the reported crackdown, asking what actions warranted such treatment. He stressed that peaceful protests should never be mistaken for lawlessness or violence.
"What wrong did these students commit? Did they vandalize property? Did they engage in violence? What exactly led to this treatment?" he questioned, underscoring the need to differentiate between peaceful dissent and unlawful behavior. Expressing his solidarity with demonstrators nationwide, Tovino affirmed his support for anyone protesting peacefully for a just cause. He stated that dissent should not be perceived as an act against the nation but as a vital democratic right.
"To every individual protesting peacefully for a just cause across our country, I offer my full support. The right to dissent is not a threat to democracy; it is one of its fundamental pillars," he wrote. Anticipating potential backlash regarding his comments, Tovino addressed those who might challenge his patriotism, clarifying that his views stem from humanitarian principles rather than political affiliations. "To anyone questioning my nationalism, I know myself better than you do. This transcends politics, religion, and all forms of division. My politics is humanity. My belief is peace. Jai Hind," he concluded.
Tovino Thomas' comments have ignited extensive discussions on social media, with many users commending the actor for addressing an issue they believe is crucial to democratic values and civil liberties. One user remarked, “He has articulated what needed to be said with courage... Huge respect,” while another noted, “Finally, an artist with integrity in the Malayalam film industry ❤️ Tovino Thomas.” Others echoed similar sentiments, praising his bravery in speaking out.
In addition to Tovino, several other actors and filmmakers have publicly shown their support for the students' protests and criticized the handling of peaceful demonstrations, including Riteish Deshmukh, Vijay Varma, and others.
