Title Change of Love Insurance Kompany: The Story Behind LIK
The Reason Behind the Title Change of LIK
Vignesh Shivan recently shared insights into the unexpected title change of his film, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK). Originally named LIC, which stands for Love Insurance Company, the project encountered legal challenges due to its resemblance to the Life Insurance Corporation of India. This prompted the filmmakers to reconsider their title. Featuring actors Pradeep Ranganathan, Krithi Shetty, and S J Suryah, the film was ultimately released under a revised name. Here’s a closer look at the circumstances that led to this decision.
Why Was the Original Title of LIK Abandoned?
The initial title raised red flags because of its close association with Life Insurance Corporation of India, a major public sector entity in the country. The potential legal implications of using the same acronym as a well-known organization became apparent to the filmmakers. They quickly recognized that sticking with the original title could result in complications that might delay or even prevent the film's release. In a conversation with Sudhir Srinivasan on YouTube, Vignesh Shivan disclosed the staggering financial demand from the insurance company. He mentioned that the corporation requested Rs 112 crore to allow the filmmakers to keep the LIC title. “I don’t have Rs 112 crore,” he humorously remarked. Alternatives like LIP, LIT, LIK, and LIF were already being considered.
After deliberation, the team settled on LIK while keeping the full name Love Insurance Kompany. The unconventional spelling of 'Kompany' added a unique flair, helping the film to stand out in a crowded market. The director noted that this creative choice resonated well with audiences post-release, indicating that the last-minute alteration benefited the film.
Overview of LIK
Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) premiered on April 10 after facing several delays. Although it received mixed reviews, the film has achieved respectable box office success, amassing approximately Rs 39 crore globally within its first four days. Set in the year 2040, LIK delves into a futuristic scenario where love can be insured.
The narrative follows a man who depends on an app that forecasts and manages relationship outcomes. However, when he falls in love, the app starts to meddle in his personal affairs, ultimately categorizing his relationship as a failure. As the technology begins to manipulate emotions instead of merely predicting them, he faces a dilemma between logic and authentic human connection. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander collaborates once again with director Vignesh for LIK, with Ravi Varman serving as the director of photography and Pradeep E Ragav as the editor.
