The Inspiring Journey Behind Satinder Sartaaj's Viral Hit 'Jaiye Sajana'
The Story Behind 'Jaiye Sajana'
Punjabi Sufi artist Satinder Sartaaj recently shared the captivating backstory of his popular song Jaiye Sajana from the film Dhurandhar: The Revenge. During an episode of the podcast Baatein Dil Se, hosted by Navika Kumar, Sartaaj revealed how the track was created just days before the film's audio launch. The narrative is particularly intriguing as a last-minute call transformed into one of the most cherished songs, recorded in a mere 15 minutes, fueled by instinct and emotion. He also reflected on his nostalgic ties with actress Yami Gautam.
A Call That Changed Everything
Sartaaj recounted the pivotal moment, stating, “It was March 15… and the film was set to release on the 18th, with the music launch on the 17th.” At that time, he was in Chandigarh, preparing for a performance in Ludhiana. The unexpected twist occurred when his sound engineer received a call from Mumbai. “He said there was a call from the Dhurandhar team… they wanted me to sing a line,” Sartaaj remembered. He passed the information to his manager while continuing his preparations, casually noting how this extraordinary opportunity first came to him.
Shortly after, a three-way call was arranged, and Sartaaj found himself conversing with the film's music team. He was immediately struck by their warmth and respect. “They were very humble… speaking with such admiration,” he noted. During their chat, Sartaaj mentioned that Dhurandhar was the only Hindi film he had seen in years and expressed his appreciation for the 'Gen-Z' music featured in it. It was during this conversation that he realized he was speaking to Shashwat Sachdev, who humbly requested credit for the music. “After five minutes, I realized this is Shashwat Sachdev,” he confessed, quickly apologizing for not recognizing him sooner.
The discussion soon turned musical, with Sartaaj casually humming some ideas. The composer was so impressed that he called his wife, affectionately known as “Magic,” to listen in. What followed was remarkable. Despite having a show scheduled, Sartaaj decided to step in and assist. “I was supposed to go to Ludhiana… but I picked up the mic instead,” he told Shashwat.
Recording 'Jaiye Sajana' at Home
At his home in Chandigarh, Sartaaj had a small personal studio, an 8x8 space he calls Najamgah. Without hesitation, he prepared it for recording. “I opened the door, picked up the mic,” he explained. Even as his high-end microphone took a moment to warm up, the urgency was palpable. The producers were waiting, and the song's inclusion in the film hinged on this recording. “If you sing this line, it will be my song… otherwise, it won’t be in the film,” Sashwat informed him.
With minimal guidance, Sartaaj got to work. The team provided a rough musical framework and conveyed the emotional tone they were aiming for. “You can interpret it as you see fit,” they told him. Trusting his instincts, he composed and recorded the line almost instantly. “I did what felt right composition-wise and emotionally,” he stated. The outcome? A complete recording in under 15 minutes. “Within 10–15 minutes, I sent it back… and everyone was thrilled,” he recalled. Remarkably, this single line became a defining element of Jaiye Sajana, enhancing its emotional resonance and broad appeal.
Emotional Ties with Yami Gautam
During the extended conversation, Sartaaj shared personal stories, including how his first television appearance was facilitated by Yami Gautam's father, Mukesh Gautam. He later received a heartfelt voice message from the filmmaker. “It was such a loving message… about two and a half minutes long,” Sartaaj said, clearly touched. The director even praised Sartaaj’s memory and musical sensitivity.
Once the recording was complete, Sartaaj resumed his regular schedule as if nothing out of the ordinary had occurred. He traveled to Ludhiana for his performance and continued with shows in Jammu the following day. It wasn't until the early hours of March 17 that he truly grasped the impact of his work. He received a message from Jasmine Sandlas, the female vocalist of the hit song. “She sent a clip… and a five-minute voice note,” he shared. Her emotional reaction indicated that the song had already made a significant impact. “The love… the blessings… she expressed so much,” he added. That was the moment Sartaaj understood the significance of what had transpired - Jaiye Sajana had been released and was already resonating with audiences. The rest, as they say, is history!
