Thalapathy Vijay Receives Legal Victory Amidst Political Aspirations and Film Delays
Thalapathy Vijay's Busy Schedule
Currently, Thalapathy Vijay is navigating a hectic period as he gears up for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections while anticipating the release of his final film, Jana Nayagan. Compounding his challenges, he is also facing multiple legal issues. However, he received positive news from the court on Monday when the Madras High Court dismissed a petition that questioned the financial disclosures in his election documents. This ruling is a significant relief for Vijay as he transitions into full-time politics.
Court Dismisses Petition Against Vijay
Madras High Court Dismissed Plea Against Vijay
A petition was filed by Chennai resident MP Venkatesh in the Madras High Court, alleging that Vijay had either concealed or inaccurately reported financial information in his election affidavit for the Perambur constituency. Venkatesh requested an investigation by the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission of India, citing loans amounting to crores given to family members while Vijay's affidavit stated zero liabilities. He argued that this discrepancy misled voters and violated election laws, infringing on citizens' rights to make informed decisions.
However, the bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice Arul Murugan dismissed the petition, marking a clear victory for Vijay in this instance. It is worth noting that another petition remains pending, filed by a different individual, claiming that Vijay failed to disclose over Rs 100 crore in one of his constituency affidavits. The High Court had previously issued a notice to the Election Commission and Income Tax Department regarding this matter on April 20, which is still under consideration.
Current Status of Jana Nayagan
What Is The Status Of Jana Nayagan?
Jana Nayagan has faced significant delays primarily due to issues with obtaining a censor certificate from the CBFC. Initially slated for release in October 2025, the film's release was postponed to January 9, 2026, and has since faced further delays due to censorship complications. KVN Productions submitted the film to the CBFC on December 18, 2025, but despite agreeing to necessary cuts, a final certificate has yet to be issued. In January 2026, the producers approached the Madras High Court, citing financial strain caused by the delays.
The CBFC's revising committee finally screened the film on March 17, 2026, with reports indicating a potential release in May 2026. However, Amazon Prime Video reportedly withdrew from its OTT deal in March 2026, attributing the decision to ongoing certification delays. Additionally, the film's piracy leak has resulted in significant financial losses, with distributor Tirupur Subramaniam estimating losses between Rs 300 to 400 crore due to unauthorized online circulation. As of now, KVN Productions has not confirmed an official release date.
