Tarun Khanna Speaks Out on Nepotism and His Absence from Bollywood
Tarun Khanna Discusses Nepotism in Bollywood
In a recent interview with Telly Talk India, actor Tarun Khanna opened up about the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood and shared insights into why he has not made a return to films after his initial opportunities. He referenced prominent film families, particularly the Kapoors, to illustrate the deep-rooted connections that exist within the industry. Khanna emphasized that for newcomers, landing that first role is often the most daunting challenge. However, he also defended the concept of nepotism, suggesting that it is natural for those within the industry to help their children find their footing.
Challenges of Returning to Films
During his discussion with Telly Talk India, Tarun Khanna pointed out that film families have always played a crucial role in Bollywood. He noted that many actors benefit from their familial connections, making it particularly challenging for outsiders to break into the industry. "I couldn't return because my father isn't in the film business, and my mother doesn't produce or direct. A significant number of people in the industry come from film families. If I started naming names, you might be surprised. From Raj Kapoor to Deva Nand, they all had influential relatives. The Kapoor family, in particular, has strong connections. While it's easy to claim you got your first break, obtaining that initial opportunity is quite tough," he explained. He acknowledged that only a few actors, like Shah Rukh Khan and Sushant Singh Rajput, have managed to carve out successful careers without industry backing.
Khanna elaborated on his absence from films, stating that he lacks the industry support that many actors enjoy through their families. "I couldn't return because my father doesn't work in films, and my mother isn't involved in production or direction," he reiterated. He mentioned that television has provided him with steady work and recognition, making it unnecessary for him to pursue opportunities in film. "We have consistent work on TV. When there are good opportunities available, why look elsewhere?"
Nepotism: A Complex Issue
While acknowledging the contentious nature of nepotism, Khanna expressed that he does not see it as inherently negative for parents to assist their children in entering the film industry. "Nepotism isn't wrong in the film industry. It's unfair to label it as bad," he stated. He added, "Those who invest in the industry have the right to elevate their children to stardom. There’s nothing wrong with that." However, he did express concern when individuals continue to receive opportunities despite repeated failures. "Nepotism becomes problematic when certain individuals aren't succeeding. If someone hasn't performed well in multiple films, it's unlikely they will succeed in the next one. We shouldn't be blamed for that," he remarked.
Khanna also mentioned several successful actors from film families, including Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Varun Dhawan, Sunny Deol, and Bobby Deol, highlighting that they have proven their talent through their work.
Tarun Khanna is a prominent Indian actor known for his roles in both television and films. He is particularly recognized for portraying Lord Shiva in series such as RadhaKrishn, Shrimad Ramayan, Shiv Shakti – Tap Tyaag Taandav, and Veer Hanuman. In addition to his television work, he has appeared in films like Dishoom and Modi Ji Ki Beti, along with various Punjabi films.
