A Heartfelt Farewell to Bharathiraja


The Tamil film industry is in mourning following the death of the esteemed director Bharathiraja, who passed away on June 10 due to health issues related to aging. Known affectionately as Iyakkunar Imayam, Bharathiraja revolutionized Tamil cinema with his authentic storytelling and vivid depictions of rural life. His final rites are being held today, June 11, with full state honors in his hometown of Theni. As tributes flood in from political figures, fellow actors, filmmakers, and fans, the Tamil film community has paused all shooting activities today to pay homage to this cinematic legend.


Bharathiraja's Last Rites with State Honors

Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, a luminary in Tamil cinema, passed away in Chennai on June 10 at the age of 84. Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced that the director would receive full state honors during his last rites, acknowledging his significant impact on Indian cinema. The Chief Minister also visited Bharathiraja's residence on ECR to pay his respects.



According to family and official arrangements, Bharathiraja's cremation is set for today around 3 PM at his farmhouse near Vathalakundu in Theni district. Family, close friends, colleagues from the film industry, and numerous fans are expected to gather to pay their final respects. In tribute to the late filmmaker, the Tamil film industry has halted all shooting activities today. The Tamil Film Producers Council announced that film and television serial productions across the state would be suspended from 6 AM to 6 PM on June 11, allowing industry members to participate in his farewell.


The Enduring Legacy of Iyakkunar Imayam

Over a remarkable career spanning more than forty years, Bharathiraja left an indelible mark on Tamil cinema with iconic films such as 16 Vayathinile, Kizhakke Pogum Rail, Alaigal Oivathillai, Pasumpon, and Mudhal Mariyadhai. His works brought genuine rural narratives and characters to the forefront, reshaping Tamil filmmaking.



A towering figure in Indian cinema, Bharathiraja garnered six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award. He was also honored with the Padma Shri for his contributions to the arts. Beyond his films, he played a crucial role in nurturing and mentoring numerous actors who later became prominent stars, including Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha, Rekha, Karthik, Napoleon, Pandian, Chandrasekar, and Janagaraj.
