Sydney Sweeney Embraces a Major Transformation for Her Role

Los Angeles: Sydney Sweeney is fully committing to her portrayal of boxing legend Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic, undergoing a significant physical change that has altered her body in unexpected ways.

According to director David Michod, the Euphoria actress gained over 13 kilos (more than 30 pounds) for the role. In an interview with W Magazine, Sweeney detailed the rigorous preparation she undertook, both physically and mentally.

Reflecting on her training, Sweeney expressed enthusiasm, stating, “I loved it.” She dedicated three and a half months to intense workouts, which included morning weight training for an hour, two hours of kickboxing in the afternoon, and another hour of weight training in the evening.

Beyond building strength and stamina, Sweeney revealed that the transformation significantly reshaped her figure, leading to surprising changes.

She remarked, “My body was completely different. I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My b***s got bigger. And my b*** got huge. It was crazy! I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

To further embody Martin, Sweeney altered her appearance with brown contact lenses and a brunette mullet-style wig, mirroring the real-life boxing icon's look.

During filming last year, Sweeney shared glimpses of her boxing character on social media, stating, “Over the past few months, I’ve been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman—a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring.”

The untitled biopic, penned by Michod and Mirrah Foulkes, will depict Martin’s rise in women’s boxing during the 1990s, alongside the personal struggles she endured, including a traumatic experience with her abusive husband.

The film is anticipated to be released later this year.
