The film Karuppu, featuring Suriya in the lead role, has surpassed the impressive milestone of Rs 300 crore at the box office, establishing itself as the highest-grossing Tamil film of the year. Despite its ongoing success and packed theaters, the film experienced multiple delays before its eventual release on May 15. In light of the postponements, director RJ Balaji issued a heartfelt video apology to fans, expressing his regret. However, film distributor Tirupur Subramaniam has publicly criticized Balaji, addressing concerns over the film's budget overruns.

In a recent interview with Sri Sakthi Cinemas, where he serves as chairman, Tirupur Subramaniam discussed the delays surrounding Karuppu's release. He remarked, “We encountered significant issues just two days prior to its launch. The director should have faced these challenges with us instead of retreating to his car to record a video of himself crying.” He pointed out that films starring major actors often do not adhere to their release schedules, using Karuppu as a case in point. “Originally, this film was slated for a Deepavali 2025 release, but it ended up coming out eight months later.”

Concerns Over Budget Management

Subramaniam elaborated on the common issue of directors exceeding their budgets during production. He stated, “If a budget is quoted at Rs 30–40 crore, a slight increase to Rs 45 crore is acceptable. However, when it escalates to Rs 80 crore, it poses a significant risk to producers and financiers.” Regarding the success of Karuppu, he commented, “The director is now boasting about the film's success, but it was primarily Suriya who stepped up to ensure the film reached theaters. Apart from Suriya, no one else took initiative to resolve the issues.” He emphasized that artists and technicians often do not take responsibility when financial challenges arise, yet they enjoy the benefits of the film's success.
