New Delhi, Aug 14: On Friday, the Supreme Court annulled the FIRs filed against YouTuber and comedian Samay Raina along with four other comedians due to derogatory comments made about Persons with Disabilities during an episode of 'India's Got Latent'.
A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, alongside Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohan, acknowledged that the comedians had adhered to previous court orders by engaging in awareness campaigns and fundraising for Persons with Disabilities.
The comedians who received this relief include Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar (also known as Sonali Aditya Desai), and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.
The court commended their initiatives aimed at raising awareness and supporting individuals with disabilities.
Given their compliance with earlier directives, the bench decided to dismiss the criminal cases against them related to the offensive remarks.
Nonetheless, the Supreme Court stated that it would continue to review the case to gather input from Persons with Disabilities and other relevant parties regarding strategies to prevent similar content from being shared in the future.
The court hinted at potentially issuing further directives on the broader implications of the case.
Last month, the court had imposed a fine of Rs 3 lakh on the comedians for not fulfilling their previous commitments to rectify the situation.
This controversy originated from a recording of 'India's Got Latent' at Khar Habitat on November 14, 2024, which later aired. Several participants from the comedy show faced numerous criminal complaints for allegedly making inappropriate and insensitive remarks.
Among those implicated was podcaster and content creator Ranveer Allahbadia, known as BeerBiceps. His request for relief from the criminal charges is still pending in the Supreme Court, although he has been granted temporary protection from arrest.
Other figures linked to the contentious episode, including YouTuber Ashish Chanchlani and comedian Samay Raina, also encountered legal challenges related to this issue.
