Super Mario Galaxy Movie Surges Past $385 Million: Is It Set to Beat Avatar's Box Office Record?
Super Mario Galaxy Movie Hits Major Box Office Milestone
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has reached an impressive milestone, exceeding $385 million in domestic box office earnings over the weekend. This animated sequel is gearing up to challenge the domestic revenue of the least successful film in the Avatar series. Although it recently lost its top spot in domestic rankings due to the debut of another film, the Super Mario sequel is on track to hit the $400 million mark soon.
In its fourth weekend, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $20.6 million, marking a 43.6% drop from the previous weekend, largely due to the loss of 552 theaters. In just 26 days since its release, the film has amassed $385.9 million in domestic revenue. Analysts in the industry anticipate that it will surpass the $400 million threshold in the coming weekend.
Data from Box Office Mojo indicates that the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is likely to outdo the lowest-grossing film in the Avatar franchise, Avatar: Fire and Ash, which wrapped up its box office run with $404.3 million in North America. The animated feature's current trajectory suggests it may also exceed the domestic earnings of Avatar 3, although surpassing the two highest-grossing films in the franchise seems unlikely.
For reference, the original Avatar earned $785.2 million domestically, while its sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, brought in $688.4 million. If the Super Mario Galaxy Movie achieves a higher box office total than any film in the Avatar series, it would significantly bolster its legacy in cinematic history.
Globally, the Super Mario Galaxy Movie has surpassed the $800 million mark, with estimates suggesting it could reach between $1 billion and $1.1 billion in total earnings. Currently, its worldwide collection stands at $831.7 million, and the film, which debuted on April 1, continues to attract audiences around the globe.
