SS Rajamouli's Varanasi: A Groundbreaking Cinematic Journey
A New Era in Indian Cinema with Varanasi
Following the monumental success of Baahubali and RRR, acclaimed director SS Rajamouli is set to unveil his next grand project, Varanasi. Starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, this film is already making headlines due to its expansive and realistic sets constructed in Hyderabad. These elaborate sets, inspired by the revered city of Varanasi, suggest a narrative that intertwines mythology, action, and an innovative approach to time travel.
Varanasi: A Unique Take on Time Travel
One of the film's standout features is the breathtaking set that replicates the holy city of Varanasi. Covering nearly nine acres in Hyderabad, this set has been meticulously crafted by a team of over 350 professionals. From the ghats to the temples, every detail has been designed with exceptional accuracy, capturing the spiritual and visual essence of Varanasi and creating an authentic atmosphere. The set is versatile enough to depict various historical periods, playing a vital role in the film's storyline.
What distinguishes the promotional material for Varanasi is its innovative approach to time travel. Rather than relying on traditional machines or futuristic gadgets, the film seems to delve into the concept through transitions between different worlds and timelines. It is expected to traverse multiple eras, including 7200 BCE, 512 CE, and the present.
Drawing from mythological themes, including elements reminiscent of the Ramayana, Varanasi combines action, adventure, and spiritual motifs. This unique blend gives the film a distinctive character, setting it apart as a genre-defying cinematic experience rather than a conventional sci-fi narrative. With an estimated budget of around Rs 1,400 crore, it is already being hailed as one of the most ambitious Indian films to date.
Growing Anticipation for Varanasi
Even prior to its release, Varanasi has captured considerable international interest. A sneak peek of the film was presented at the Trailer Festival at Le Grand Rex in Paris, where it received an enthusiastic reception. The audience reportedly responded with loud applause and cheers, highlighting the excitement surrounding this project. The film's cast has further fueled the anticipation, with Mahesh Babu's intense portrayal of Rudhra, Priyanka Chopra Jonas's commanding role as Mandakini, and Prithviraj Sukumaran's formidable presence as Kumbha generating significant buzz on social media.
At its heart, Varanasi follows Rudhra's journey as the sacred city confronts an impending cosmic threat. The storyline spans various timelines and locations, merging mythology with high-stakes action. With music composed by MM Keeravani and state-of-the-art visual effects, the film promises to deliver a captivating visual experience. It is scheduled for theatrical release on April 7, 2027, coinciding with Ugadi.
