Sriram Raghavan Reflects on Dharmendra's Legacy in Upcoming Film 'Ikkis'
A Tribute to Dharmendra
In Sriram Raghavan's latest film, Ikkis, Dharmendra delivers one of his most remarkable performances in recent years. The veteran actor portrays Sheshadri, a noble leader of a gang facing internal treachery. Raghavan, who envisioned Dharmendra for the role of Arun Khetarpal's father, expressed his admiration for the actor, stating that he had him in mind from the very beginning of the project.
The film's ensemble cast features Jaideep Ahlawat, Simar Bhatia, Suhasini Mulay, Rahul Dev, and Vivaan Shah. Scheduled for release on December 25, with special previews on December 21, Ikkis marks Dharmendra's final appearance following his passing on November 24.
Raghavan, a long-time admirer of Dharmendra, found it challenging to select his favorite performances to celebrate the actor's upcoming 90th birthday on December 8. He acknowledged that every film featuring Dharmendra, regardless of its quality, is a delight.
Below is an edited version of Raghavan's heartfelt tribute to the legendary actor.
‘First and Only Choice for Ikkis’
Raghavan praised Dharmendra's work in Ikkis, expressing a desire for the actor to have seen the finished film. Although he managed to watch more than half, Raghavan hoped to share the completed version with him.
One of Dharmendra's early films, Haqeeqat, features a song by Kaifi Azmi, which also serves as the opening line for Ikkis. Raghavan shared that the song evokes strong emotions whenever he hears it.
Raghavan first discussed Ikkis with Dharmendra about five or six years ago, maintaining contact since their collaboration on Johnny Gaddaar. The actor often invited Raghavan and his co-writer Pooja Ladha Surti to his home for discussions about films and poetry.
Raghavan noted Dharmendra's eagerness to return to filmmaking, emphasizing that he was his first and only choice for the role. Despite initial doubts from others about his suitability, Raghavan was confident in his decision, which ultimately proved successful.
Character Inspirations and Iconic Roles
Raghavan shared that the name Sheshadri, which he used for Dharmendra's character in Johnny Gaddaar, was inspired by his maternal uncle. Initially, Dharmendra suggested the name Ranjit Singh, but it had already been used in his previous films. Raghavan felt Sheshadri was a fitting South Indian name that suited the character.
He aimed to create a gentleman thief reminiscent of characters from classic French crime films, seeking an actor whose presence could convey depth and reliability.

Reflecting on his early favorites, Raghavan recalled watching Yakeen in 1969, where Dharmendra played a double role. He noted the film's fun nature and memorable songs, one of which he later included in Johnny Gaddaar.
Raghavan emphasized that Dharmendra's presence alone draws audiences, regardless of the film's overall quality.
Memorable Moments in Cinema
In Yaadon Ki Baaraat, Dharmendra's introduction as Shankar is iconic, showcasing his character's tragic backstory and transformation. Raghavan connected personally with the film, as he is also one of three brothers.

Raghavan highlighted Dharmendra's unique ability to captivate audiences, particularly in Guddi, where he becomes the object of a schoolgirl's affection, culminating in the memorable line, “Jai Dharmendra!”
He also discussed the shift in Dharmendra's career with films like Ghulami, which marked a departure from his earlier comedic roles, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

Raghavan reminisced about watching Dharam Veer and Jeevan Mrityu, noting their larger-than-life qualities that resonated with audiences. He appreciated Dharmendra's ability to shine in both commercial hits and more nuanced roles.
Raghavan concluded by reflecting on Dharmendra's enduring appeal, citing films like Mera Gaon Mera Desh, Sholay, and Anupama as examples of his remarkable range and presence.

The Star and His Stories
Raghavan shared a personal anecdote about the song Abhi To Haath Mein Jaam from Seeta Aur Geeta, recalling a birthday celebration where he recorded a video wishing Dharmendra well. He fondly remembered a moment when Dharmendra shared a story about improvising a scene with Nutan.
Raghavan noted Dharmendra's remark that he had seen more of his films than the actor himself, highlighting their unique connection.
(As told to Nandini Ramnath.)
