Suriya's Karuppu: Box Office Triumph Amidst Visual Criticism
Karuppu's Success and Subsequent Critique
Suriya's action-packed film Karuppu has achieved remarkable success, amassing over Rs 300 crore during its theatrical release. However, following its launch on OTT platforms, the film has faced scrutiny regarding its color grading and visual effects. Director RJ Balaji has responded to the criticism, acknowledging that some CGI-heavy scenes did not meet expectations due to both practical and budgetary limitations. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Karuppu narrates the tale of Vettai Karuppu, a guardian deity who transforms into a lawyer named Saravanan to combat a corrupt legal system.
RJ Balaji Addresses Visual Effects Concerns
In a recent discussion with Cine Ulagam, RJ Balaji candidly accepted the feedback regarding the film's visual effects and color grading. He elaborated that certain CGI elements, such as head replacement shots, necessitated extensive post-production time and significant upfront payments to VFX firms. Balaji stated, "For instance, a head replacement shot can take eight to ten months to complete. We needed to pay the company in advance, but we faced challenges in meeting those financial obligations and deadlines."
One of the most talked-about scenes post-OTT release was the climax featuring Suriya's beloved police character from the Singam series. Balaji revealed that the team had initially envisioned multiple shots for this sequence but had to scale back due to technical difficulties. He admitted, "We didn't execute it well, and that's the reality. After the streaming launch, there were four to five specific issues that viewers pointed out, and this was one of them. Nonetheless, many fans are still enjoying the film online as much as they did in theaters."
Karuppu's Box Office Performance
Despite the critiques, Karuppu stands as one of the top Tamil blockbusters of the year, earning over Rs 175 crore in Tamil Nadu alone. Its impressive performance has significantly uplifted the Tamil film industry in 2026, a year marked by several underperforming releases. With major films like Jana Nayagan and Jailer 2 on the horizon, Karuppu has solidified Suriya's status at the box office.
The cast includes Trisha, Indrans, Swasika, Sshivada, Anagha Maya Ravi, Supreeth Reddy, and Natty Natraj, with RJ Balaji portraying the antagonist Baby Kannan. The film is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
