Simon Pegg Reflects on His Bond with Tom Cruise
Actor Simon Pegg has shared his appreciation for his friendship with Tom Cruise, attributing it to his ability to handle the challenges of fame. The 56-year-old star has collaborated with the iconic actor in six films of the 'Mission: Impossible' series. Pegg admires how Cruise, now 64, navigates public scrutiny, highlighting that the 'Top Gun' actor remains grounded and aware of his celebrity status. In a conversation with The Sunday Times magazine, Pegg noted, "He can't go anywhere without being recognized. Yet, when he does, he is very conscious of who he is and what that entails."
Pegg stressed the significance of having a positive outlook towards fans, stating, "Anyone who gets annoyed or dismisses fans who approach them to share kind words is an a*******." He has also aimed to debunk the "strange myths" surrounding Cruise, enjoying the chance to connect with him on a personal level. "I've managed to navigate through all the odd stories about him; I appreciate being just normal with him," Pegg remarked.
Alongside discussing his friendship with Cruise, Pegg opened up about his past struggles with alcohol. He candidly shared that he used to drink excessively during bouts of depression and believes he might still be battling alcoholism if not for his fame. Reflecting on his 16 years of sobriety, he stated, "Fame didn't create my issues; it may have intensified them at times, but they existed before I became famous." This acknowledgment sheds light on the personal battles he faced long before reaching stardom.
Pegg also mentioned his dedication to a healthier lifestyle, which he embraced after quitting alcohol. He has incorporated daily 10k runs and strength training into his routine, expressing, "There’s something uplifting about taking care of myself, and I enjoy working out because it releases endorphins." He expressed a wish to live a long life, saying, "The men who were 56 when I was younger seemed ancient, and I just want to enjoy life for many more years. Because, honestly, I love life."
Reflecting on his mental health journey, Pegg revealed that a stay in a mental health facility in 2010 was crucial in turning his life around. He admitted he was initially reluctant to share this experience publicly due to fear of judgment. "I was apprehensive. If someone could relate? That would be great. Experiencing pain can feel incredibly isolating," he explained. Pegg's openness about his challenges serves as a reminder that even those who seem to have it all can face profound difficulties.
