Director Ranjith Balakrishnan Arrested Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

The arrest of Malayalam filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan over allegations of sexual assault has sent shockwaves through the Malayalam film community and its fans. An actress has accused him of sexual harassment, leading to his detention for 14 days at Ernakulam Sub Jail in Kerala. In response to this incident, the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), a pioneering organization for women in the Malayalam film industry, has voiced its concerns regarding the situation and the industry's operational standards.

WCC Responds to the Arrest

In a statement released on Instagram, the WCC expressed that the allegations against Balakrishnan have deeply unsettled the film community in Kerala. They criticized the existing system, stating that it fails to function effectively. The WCC raised questions about the lack of action despite directives from the High Court and the absence of a new cinema policy being enforced on film sets. They highlighted the need for the Internal Committee (IC) to be involved, questioning why it was not consulted during this serious incident.

The WCC pointed out that many in the industry view the IC as a hindrance rather than a necessary safeguard. They emphasized that the industry must no longer ignore these issues and must implement the ICs and adhere to the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) guidelines to ensure a safe and respectful workplace for all.

The WCC commended the young actress for her bravery in reporting the incident to the police and assured her of their support throughout the investigation. Following the allegations, Ranjith Balakrishnan has been suspended from the Film Employees Federation of Kerala.

Details of the Allegations

According to the actress's complaint, Ranjith allegedly invited her to a caravan during a film shoot and attempted to assault her. Based on her statement, charges have been filed against him for various offenses, including sexual assault and wrongful confinement. In contrast, Balakrishnan has publicly denied the allegations, claiming they are unfounded. Stay tuned for further updates!
