Shah Rukh Khan's Generous Support for 'Deool Band 2' Boosts Marathi Cinema
Shah Rukh Khan's Financial Aid for 'Deool Band 2'
Pravin Tarde, the filmmaker behind 'Deool Band 2', disclosed that Shah Rukh Khan played a crucial role in providing financial support prior to the film's launch. His company, Red Chillies Entertainment, agreed to waive a substantial bill of around ₹42 lakh associated with the film's Digital Cinema Package (DCP).
'Deool Band 2' was produced with a budget estimated between ₹8–10 crore and has successfully earned over ₹80 crore at the domestic box office, securing its position among the top five highest-grossing Marathi films ever. However, the journey to get the film into theaters was fraught with challenges.
In an interview with *Abhijat Marathi Filmy*, Tarde mentioned that the production team had initially approached Red Chillies Entertainment to create the DCP, which is essential for theatrical releases. They had allocated around ₹12 lakh for this task but were later informed that the total cost would be approximately ₹42 lakh.
This unexpected expense posed a significant hurdle for the filmmakers, who were operating with limited funds but aimed for a grand release. Tarde remarked, "The bill reached ₹42 lakh. We lacked the financial means and had no way to gather such an amount." As a result, they reached out to Red Chillies, explaining that 'Deool Band 2' was a regional Marathi film produced on a modest budget.
The situation eventually caught Shah Rukh Khan's attention, prompting him to inquire about the film and its creators through his technical team. They informed him that the same filmmakers were behind 'Mulshi Pattern', which was later adapted into Hindi as 'Antim' starring Salman Khan.
Upon discovering that the DCP was ready but being withheld due to non-payment, Shah Rukh promptly instructed Red Chillies to release it. Tarde recounted, "Shah Rukh Khan simply said, 'Waive their bill. This is a Marathi film. Give them the DCP; we can sort out the payment later. If the film is good, just hand over the DCP.'"
Tarde expressed his admiration for Shah Rukh Khan and the Red Chillies team, highlighting their respect for Marathi cinema and their willingness to prioritize the film over financial matters. He acknowledged that Shah Rukh's backing was particularly impactful, especially since there was uncertainty about the film's potential success at that time.
Tarde stated, "What Shah Rukh Khan did—supporting the film when it was nothing, when no one knew if it would succeed—will always be remembered. I will remain forever grateful to him." He also expressed a wish to arrange a personal screening of the film for Shah Rukh. Tarde not only directed the film but also penned its story.
'Deool Band 2' stars Snehal Tarde in the lead role, with Mohan Joshi reprising his role as Swami Samarth. The film delves into the intricate issues surrounding farmers' suicides and the tension between faith and skepticism. Its compelling storyline and positive word-of-mouth have contributed to its status as a historic blockbuster in Marathi cinema.
