Mumbai, September 19: Renowned singer Shaan has released a heartfelt song in memory of his late friend, Assamese music legend Zubeen Garg, marking the first anniversary of his passing.
Shaan took to social media to share a video montage of Zubeen, captioning it: “Long Live #Zubeen Woh Jo sabka apna hai .. Hamesha rahega .. Banke Apna !!” The tribute features Shaan alongside Mahalaxmi Iyer, who provides the female vocals.
This tribute comes one year after Zubeen Garg's untimely death in Singapore on September 19, 2025, at the age of 52. He had traveled to Singapore for the North East India Festival and was set to perform on September 20. Tragically, he became unresponsive while swimming during an outing from a yacht near Lazarus Island.
Initial reports suggested a scuba-diving accident, but an investigation revealed that Garg had been swimming from a yacht, had taken off his life jacket, and re-entered the water without it.
He lost consciousness while attempting to swim back to the yacht and was subsequently rescued and transported to Singapore General Hospital, where he later passed away.
Shaan and Zubeen shared a close friendship and collaborated on various musical projects, including the Assamese track “Mon Ghanot,” featuring other artists.
Born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, Zubeen Garg launched his professional music career with the Assamese album Anamika in 1992.
Over his impressive three-decade career, he excelled as a singer, composer, songwriter, music director, actor, and filmmaker, recording in multiple Indian languages.
While he was already a prominent figure in Assam and the Northeast, Zubeen gained national recognition with the song “Ya Ali” from the 2006 Hindi film Gangster: A Love Story, which became one of his signature Hindi film tracks.
He also contributed his voice to popular songs such as “Dilruba” from Namastey London and “Jag Lal Lal Lal” from Big Brother.
