Sam Neill's Family Reveals Cause of Death and Memorial Plans
Sam Neill's Passing and Memorial Arrangements
The beloved actor Sam Neill, known for his role in Jurassic Park, has passed away at the age of 78. His representative, Philip Grenz, disclosed that Neill succumbed to pneumonia. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, Grenz mentioned that the actor's family intends to hold a private memorial service at his farm in New Zealand, respecting his preference for privacy. "As Sam was a very private individual who disliked attention, his family will commemorate him with a family-only memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a later date," Grenz stated, urging for privacy during this challenging time for the family.
Grenz also shared that Neill remained active in his career until his last days, completing four projects in the past year. One of these is The Last Resort, a romantic comedy directed by Donald Petrie, featuring Daisy Ridley and Alden Ehrenreich. Additionally, he is set to appear in the upcoming film Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
In lieu of flowers, Neill's family has requested that fans contribute to causes he was passionate about, including The Dunstan Hospital Foundation, The Snowdome Foundation, and various New Zealand conservation efforts aimed at protecting wildlife and native forests.
On July 13, Neill's family announced his "sudden and unexpected" death via an Instagram post. They clarified that he had been cancer-free at the time of his passing, despite having been diagnosed with stage 3 angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare blood cancer, in 2022.
Earlier this year, Neill expressed optimism about his health, stating in an interview with Australia's 7NEWS, "I've had a scan just now, and there is no cancer in my body. This is an extraordinary thing." He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the iconic Jurassic Park series, a role he reprised in Jurassic Park III (2001) and Jurassic World: Dominion (2022). Beyond this franchise, Neill had a distinguished career with notable performances in films like The Piano, Event Horizon, Possession, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, as well as appearances in TV series such as The Tudors, Peaky Blinders, and The Twelve. He initially gained fame for his role in Omen III.
Throughout his impressive five-decade career, Neill received two Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations. In 2025, he was honored with the Australian Logie Award for Best Lead Actor in a Drama for his role in The Twelve. He also published a memoir titled Did I Ever Tell You This? in 2023. Sam Neill is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.
