Understanding Trigeminal Neuralgia
Salman Khan's Ongoing Battle with Trigeminal Neuralgia
For those unfamiliar, Salman has been battling trigeminal neuralgia, a debilitating condition characterized by severe facial pain, often likened to electric shocks. This disorder can cause intense discomfort during everyday activities such as eating or speaking, significantly affecting one’s quality of life. Last year, Salman candidly discussed his struggles with this condition during an appearance on a talk show, revealing that he first experienced symptoms in 2007 while filming Partner.
He shared that living with such pain is challenging, stating, "I had it for seven-and-a-half years. It would hurt every four to five minutes, making simple tasks like having breakfast take an hour and a half." Salman also mentioned that he was prescribed painkillers, but they offered minimal relief. Initially misdiagnosed as a dental issue, it wasn't until later that doctors identified it as a nerve-related problem. He underwent Gamma Knife Surgery, which provided some relief, and he expressed gratitude that the pain eventually subsided.
Salman highlighted the severe impact of trigeminal neuralgia, noting that it has one of the highest suicide rates among those who suffer from it. He aims to raise awareness about this condition, as many remain unaware of its existence.
