Ryan Reynolds recently opened up about a traumatic experience from his youth that led to a month-long hospital stay. At just 18 years old, the actor made the wise choice to walk home after having a drink instead of getting behind the wheel. Unfortunately, shortly after starting his journey, he was hit by a drunk driver in Vancouver. The accident was catastrophic, resulting in multiple fractures on the left side of his body and rendering the car involved completely wrecked.

In a heartfelt conversation with Rob McElhenney for GQ, Reynolds recounted the incident, which took place long before he became a household name in Hollywood. “I was hit by a drunk driver after making a responsible decision for an 18-year-old. I ended up spending four weeks in the hospital,” he shared. McElhenney, who co-owns Wrexham AFC with Reynolds, expressed his astonishment, saying, “That’s the first time I’ve heard that!”

Reynolds went on to describe the crash, emphasizing the violent nature of the impact. “Oh yeah, I broke every bone on my left side,” he remarked, highlighting the gravity of the event. He explained that after leaving a bar where he had a beer, he chose not to drive, thinking, “I’m not going to drive anywhere. Even if it’s just four blocks home, absolutely not.” Tragically, while he was crossing the street, he was struck by the vehicle.

The actor reflected on the experience as both excruciating and surreal, especially since he believed he had made the right decision by not driving. He also expressed his appreciation for the medical care he received during his recovery, praising the effectiveness of Canada’s healthcare system and the commitment of the doctor who treated him.
