A Nostalgic Reunion at the Oscars

During the 98th Academy Awards, iconic actors Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, known for their roles as Iron Man and Captain America, respectively, shared the stage, marking nearly 14 years since the debut of The Avengers. This moment was a treat for Marvel enthusiasts as they presented the awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Screenplay at the Dolby Theatre.

Before announcing the first award, Downey Jr. emphasized the significance of screenwriting in filmmaking, stating, “Wow, the script, right? It’s the driving force of any film, and this has truly been a banner year for screenwriters.” The two actors engaged in a light-hearted banter that highlighted their long-standing connection within the Marvel universe. Evans remarked on the occasion, noting its importance for both of them.

Evans playfully asked, “What’d you get me for our anniversary?” to which Downey Jr. humorously replied, “Dude, hold on.” Evans then reminded the audience that it was the 14th anniversary of their first Avengers film, revealing he had a signed copy of the original script from the entire cast. Downey Jr. joined in the fun, claiming he had a gift too, but instead handed Evans a valet parking ticket, leading to more laughter.

The comedic exchange continued after Paul Thomas Anderson won the Best Adapted Screenplay for One Battle After Another. Before announcing the Best Original Screenplay winner, Downey Jr. returned from backstage with what he claimed was Evans’ anniversary gift, presenting him with “the official tanning shadeam thong from Magic Mike,” which elicited a humorous response from the audience, including Channing Tatum, who jokingly requested its return.

This Marvel-themed moment was anticipated, as the Oscars had hinted at a superhero reunion prior to the event. Executive producer Katy Mullan had teased, “There’s also going to be a Marvel reunion for the superhero fans. So we’re gonna have superstar superheroes, and there is also going to be an extraterrestrial on the stage.”

As the Marvel franchise gears up for an exciting year, fans can look forward to the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, featuring Tom Holland, set to hit theaters on July 31. Additionally, Avengers: Doomsday, the much-anticipated sequel to Avengers: Endgame, is scheduled for release on December 18, promising to unite numerous characters from the Marvel universe.
