Richa Chadha Faces Legal Backlash Over Controversial Tweet: What Happened?
Richa Chadha's Social Media Activity Sparks Controversy
Although Richa Chadha has stepped back from acting, she remains highly active on social media platforms, particularly X. The actress frequently shares her thoughts and advocates for various causes that are important to her. Known for her sharp retorts to critics, she also aims to correct any misinformation about herself. However, a recent tweet has landed her in legal trouble. Chadha shared an unverified post accusing a man of sexual misconduct, which has drawn criticism from the Delhi High Court for promoting allegations without a formal complaint from the alleged victim.
The Incident That Triggered Legal Action
Last month, a journalist accused a fellow passenger of inappropriate behavior during a flight from Delhi to Mumbai, which reportedly occurred on March 11. Her post included the man's name, photo, and professional details, quickly gaining traction online and being covered by various media outlets.
Richa, known for her outspoken nature on X, re-shared the allegations with the caption: "Make him famous." However, the accused man denied the claims, stating he remained seated and fell asleep before landing. He subsequently filed a defamation lawsuit against the journalist, Chadha, and several media organizations in the Delhi High Court.
Court's Criticism of Richa Chadha
The case was recently reviewed by Justice Vikas Mahajan, with Richa represented by Senior Advocate Madhav Khuranna and a team of lawyers. Despite removing her post, Richa faced backlash for endorsing unverified claims. The court noted that her comment, "Make him famous," crossed the boundaries of free speech, leading to public shaming and digital vigilantism. Justice Mahajan emphasized that public figures have a responsibility to verify information before amplifying serious allegations.
He stated, "The Court is prima facie of the view that endorsement of unverified allegations has inflicted immediate, exponential, and incalculable harm on the plaintiff's reputation." The judge also criticized the journalist for not contacting authorities prior to posting on social media, highlighting that while she has the right to report grievances, publicizing such serious allegations without an official investigation infringes on the plaintiff's dignity and right to a fair trial. Richa was warned against escalating matters without adequate evidence.
