Theatrical Revival in Guwahati

Guwahati, Oct 4: The vibrant world of the circus is set to enchant audiences once more as Ishaan Creations, a theatre group named after the renowned Ishaan Barua, presents 'Puruxh', a celebrated play from 1964 by esteemed Assamese playwright Arun Sarma.

This production is often characterized by its expressionist elements, focusing on the story of Xukanta, a young man who returns from England with aspirations of becoming a poet and an expert in English literature. However, his dreams take a dramatic turn following the unexpected passing of his father, compelling him to take over the struggling Rupali Circus.

Xukanta's marriage to Hiramoni, a woman with a deep love for the circus, adds layers of complexity to his life. Her domineering nature and dismissive attitude contribute to Xukanta’s escalating mental distress. As the circus faces mounting challenges and his marriage falters, the play delves into the emotional and psychological impacts of a life dictated by uncontrollable circumstances.

Now considered a classic in Assamese theatre, 'Puruxh' will be performed on October 4 at the Madhavadeva International Auditorium, Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Panjabari, with performances scheduled for 5 pm and 7 pm, as announced in a press release.

The production is designed and directed by Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Abinash Sarma.

Dr. Chinmoy Chakraborty will take on the role of Xukanta, while Mayuri Bharali will portray Hiramoni. The characters of Phutuka and the second clown will be played by Ripam Bharadwaj and Darshan Bhattacharjya, respectively.

Music for the production has been composed by Lian Sharma and Mandeep Mahanta. Costume design is by Rani Dutta Baruah, with set and publicity design managed by Uma Kant Sonowal. Lighting design is credited to Dimpal Das, and make-up is handled by Panku Hazarika.
