Reflecting on 27 Years of Ghulam: Insights from Vikram Bhatt

A Journey Through Time
Vikram, how do you reflect on the twenty-seven years since Ghulam?
Looking back, it’s astonishing how quickly time has flown. It feels like just yesterday that we were working on Ghulam. The entire process of creating this film could fill a book of its own.
Initial Directorial Choices
Was Mahesh Bhatt originally involved?
There’s an interesting backstory, but I’ll save that for my future book. Mahesh (Bhatt) suggested to Aamir that he should direct Ghulam. However, there were two other directors in the mix—Tanuja and myself. Aamir opted to collaborate with me, as we had a prior working relationship and friendship.
Working with Aamir Khan
What was your experience like with ‘Mr. Perfectionist’?
Aamir has often been labeled as Mr. Perfectionist, but that’s a bit misleading. He invests considerable thought into his work. When he sees a director or writer equally dedicated, it makes him feel more at ease, leading to fewer lengthy discussions.
Creative Freedom
Did Aamir allow you to direct as you wished?
I recall a scene we shot in Ballard Estate where I had a specific vision. After some effort, Aamir humorously remarked, “Yaar Vicky main duniya ko pakata hoon tu mujhe pakka raha hain,” and we both laughed at that.
Convincing Aamir to Sing
Was it difficult to persuade Aamir to sing?
It wasn’t hard to convince Aamir to sing for 'Aati Kya Khandala.' While driving back from a shoot, I explained that the song felt more like a dialogue, which made him agree to perform it.
Rani Mukerji's Dubbing
In retrospect, should Rani have dubbed her own lines?
Looking back, yes, Rani should have voiced her own lines. But as the saying goes, if hindsight could be bottled, it would be worth its weight in gold.
Ghulam's Significance
How do you view Ghulam in your body of work?
Ghulam is a true labor of love for me. It was one of the most challenging films I’ve ever made. Honestly, it wouldn’t have been possible without Aamir’s unwavering support. He backed my decisions without question. Ghulam will always hold a special place in my filmography.
Looking Back
If given the chance, what would you change about Ghulam?
I wouldn’t change a thing. While no film is perfect, many wonderful elements and talented individuals came together to create Ghulam, whether by chance or design.
