Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, widely known as MS Subbulakshmi, hailed from Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She is celebrated as one of India's foremost classical musicians and a master of Carnatic music, beginning her performances at a young age. Subbulakshmi gained fame for her profound devotional singing and mastery of classical music, becoming a global ambassador for Indian culture with performances at prestigious venues, including the United Nations in 1966. Known as the 'Queen of Carnatic Music', she popularized devotional pieces like the Vishnu Sahasranamam and Meera bhajans across India. In addition to her musical career, she also appeared in films, notably the Tamil and Hindi adaptations of Meera, which contributed to her widespread recognition.

Subbulakshmi was the first musician to be awarded India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, in 1998. She was also the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the first woman to earn the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi title from the Madras Music Academy. She passed away on December 11, 2004, in Chennai at the age of 88.
