Ranveer Singh's Upcoming Film 'Pralay': A Groundbreaking Post-Apocalyptic Thriller
Excitement Builds for 'Pralay'
The anticipation surrounding Pralay is on the rise as it marks Ranveer Singh's next venture following his massive hits, Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar 2. This ambitious post-apocalyptic thriller, directed by Hansal Mehta, is set to redefine the landscape of Indian cinema. Mehta has indicated that the film will incorporate extensive visual effects while being produced at a significantly lower budget than typical Hollywood projects. He has also denied any claims that the film is based on the novel Blindness.
How 'Pralay' Captured Ranveer Singh's Interest
Produced under Hansal Mehta’s new banner, True Story Films, 'Pralay' is helmed by his son, Jai Mehta, who is making his directorial debut. The film is co-produced by Ranveer Singh’s own production company, Ma Kasam Films, and boasts a substantial budget of approximately Rs 300 crore. Currently in pre-production, 'Pralay' has undergone significant development, with the screenplay crafted over several months by Jai Mehta and co-writer Vishal Kapoor. Hansal Mehta shared that the development process involved not just writing but also detailed concept-proofing and pre-visualization to create the film’s expansive universe.
Discussing the film’s evolution, Hansal revealed to THR India that the concept had been in development for quite some time before it piqued Ranveer Singh's interest. Once the actor expressed his enthusiasm, the team dedicated significant resources to enhance the narrative and visual aspects. The film aims to depict a dystopian, post-apocalyptic world that is unlike anything seen in mainstream Hindi cinema.
An Original Story with Cutting-Edge VFX
'Pralay' is set to portray a world engulfed in chaos, featuring a city overrun by zombies. According to Mehta, the scale of world-building is unprecedented for Indian cinema. He emphasized that the development process encompasses not only storytelling but also visualizing and shaping ideas to ensure they translate effectively on screen. Addressing rumors, Hansal clarified that 'Pralay' is an original narrative and not an adaptation of José Saramago’s Blindness, asserting that Jai Mehta and Vishal Kapoor have crafted a completely unique story.
A key focus of the project is its ambitious use of visual effects. Hansal confirmed that the film will heavily rely on VFX to construct its dystopian environment, with the team collaborating with international experts to realize this vision. Despite the extensive VFX work, the creators aim to keep production costs significantly lower than Hollywood standards. Mehta noted that the film's success will depend on how immersive and believable its world feels, and the team is actively working to balance scale with budget constraints. Filming is anticipated to commence in mid-2026, marking Ranveer Singh's debut as a producer.
