Rajkummar Rao Transforms for His Role in Upcoming Action Drama 'Maalik'

Rajkummar Rao Takes on a New Challenge
Renowned for his diverse roles, Rajkummar Rao has portrayed a myriad of characters, from a human rights lawyer to a cricketer. However, he is stepping into uncharted territory with his latest role as a ruthless gangster in the film Maalik.
Set against the backdrop of Allahabad in 1988, Rao's character is depicted as someone who thrives on violence rather than hard work, showcasing a significant shift in his acting repertoire.
The film is helmed by Pulkit, who previously directed Rao in the series Bose: Dead/Alive (2017). The cast also features talents like Manushi Chhillar, Prosenjit Chatterjee, Saurabh Shukla, and Anshumaan Pushkar.
Maalik marks a pivotal moment for Rao, who has been recognized for his nuanced performances since his debut in Hindi cinema in 2010. His previous works, including the horror-comedy Stree (2018) and its sequel Stree 2 (2024), have garnered both critical acclaim and box office success.
At 40, Rao is now balancing multiple film projects alongside web series. He has also launched a production company with his wife, Patralekha, named Kampa Films, which will soon debut with the comedy Toaster on Netflix.
As Maalik approaches its release on July 11, Rao shared insights about his motivations for choosing the film, his evolving career, and his thoughts on pacing his projects.
Choosing 'Maalik': A Story-Driven Decision
Rao explained that while he has received offers for action films in the past, he often struggled to connect with the narratives. For him, a compelling story is essential; otherwise, he might as well watch YouTube videos.
He found Maalik to have a strong storyline with a clear arc, featuring a character who transitions from a powerless individual to a rebellious figure. The opportunity to engage in action sequences was an added bonus.
Preparation for the Role
Rao's preparation for Maalik involved significant physical transformation, including gaining weight and growing out his hair. He aimed to embody strength and differentiate himself from his previous roles.
Beyond the physical changes, he focused on understanding the character's essence, which revolves around power—both internal and external.
Connecting with Characters
Rao enjoys reading scripts and often relies on his instincts. While he sometimes seeks feedback from Patralekha, once he commits to a role, he immerses himself in the character, visualizing their traits and mannerisms.
He believes that comedy requires spontaneity and fun, while dramatic roles necessitate deeper preparation, as seen in his work for Shrikant, where he researched the experiences of visually impaired individuals.
Evolving as an Actor
Since starting his career in 2010, Rao's approach has remained consistent, focusing on exciting stories. He acknowledges that filmmaking is primarily a director's medium, and the quality of the director significantly impacts the film's outcome.
His current choices are heavily influenced by the filmmakers involved, alongside the story itself.
Box Office Considerations
Rao admits that while box office success is important, he does not let it dictate his choices. He prefers to select scripts that resonate with audiences rather than chase potential financial success.
He recalls how the first Stree was made on a modest budget, yet exceeded expectations at the box office.
Navigating Social Media
Rao is not particularly active on social media, primarily using Instagram to promote his work. He even considered quitting the platform but was advised against it.
He maintains a WhatsApp group with his classmates from the Film and Television Institute of India, where they support each other during film releases and celebrate birthdays.
Balancing Work and Personal Life
Despite his busy schedule, Rao expresses a desire for a break from constant work. He acknowledges the promotional demands that come with each film but finds it hard to turn down compelling scripts like Maalik.
He has no regrets about roles he has declined, focusing instead on the projects that excite him.
Future as a Producer
With his production company, Kampa Films, Rao aims to create unique and unconventional content. They have completed one film, Toaster, and are currently working on another project set for theatrical release.
