Rahul Ravindran Exits X Amidst Threats to His Family
Rahul Ravindran's Decision to Leave X
Director and actor Rahul Ravindran has made the decision to delete his account on X following a barrage of abusive messages and death threats directed at his children. This backlash erupted after he expressed his thoughts on the death of Pune resident Ketan Agarwal during a discussion focused on gender issues and societal patriarchy. As the conversation escalated, Rahul and his family found themselves the targets of personal attacks on social media. In explaining his choice to leave the platform, he noted that the harassment had taken a toll on his mental health and made him uneasy about his emotional reactions. Here’s a closer look at the situation and the reasons behind his departure.
What Prompted Rahul Ravindran to Leave X?
Rahul stated that he decided to quit X after receiving threatening messages aimed at his children. The controversy began when a user questioned why he had not created a film addressing 'atrocities against men,' referencing Ketan Agarwal's death. In response, Rahul pointed out the inherent patriarchy in society, which led to a wave of personal attacks against him and his family.
In a detailed statement, Rahul revealed that he had contemplated leaving X for some time but continued to use it due to its value for sports updates, especially regarding Indian sports beyond cricket. However, after checking the app for football updates during the Brazil vs Japan match, he was confronted with the abusive comments in his notifications.
Rahul Reflects on the Impact of Online Abuse
Rahul shared that the messages he received left him feeling angry and emotionally unsettled. He expressed that the experience made him dislike the person he had become while engaging with the online hostility, and he did not want any social media platform to dictate his emotional state. While some may view his decision as an overreaction, he concluded that stepping away from X was the healthiest option for him and his family, as he no longer wished to expose them to such negativity.
Previously, his wife, singer Chinmayi Sripaada, had come to his defense by sharing one of his earlier posts that emphasized marriage, empathy, and mutual respect. She encouraged women to either marry someone like Rahul or not marry at all. Rahul Ravindran is recognized for directing 'The Girlfriend,' featuring Rashmika Mandanna, a psychological drama that delves into themes of emotional dependency and toxic relationships. In addition to his work in directing, Rahul has established a successful career as an actor and writer, making his directorial debut with 'Chi La Sow' in 2018, which won him the National Film Award for Best Original Screenplay.
