Initially, engineer David Mah developed the prototype of Quordle, which was later refined by Freddie Meyer. Drawing from Dordle, where players solve two grids simultaneously, Quordle was launched in February 2022 and quickly gained popularity, attracting one million players within weeks.


Merriam-Webster purchased Quordle in January 2023 for an undisclosed amount, with company president Greg Barlow noting that the game was a favorite among employees and a valuable addition to their game offerings.
