Punjab High Court Approves Release of Lawrence Of Punjab Documentary with Title Change
Legal Approval for Lawrence Of Punjab Documentary
The documentary series 'Lawrence Of Punjab' on Zee5, which focuses on the incarcerated gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, has been embroiled in a significant legal dispute. After extensive deliberations, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that the series can be released, albeit with a crucial stipulation. The documentary has garnered attention due to concerns regarding its potential glorification of Bishnoi, a claim the producers have refuted.
High Court Mandates Title Change for Release
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has given the green light for the Zee5 documentary's release, provided that the title is altered to exclude 'Lawrence' and 'Punjab'. Justice Jagmohan Bansal, who personally reviewed the documentary, concluded that it does not glorify any individual and can be released, contingent upon the title and promotional material being modified.
The court emphasized that the names 'Lawrence Bishnoi' and 'Punjab' must not appear in any promotional content, including trailers and posters. This legal matter arose from a petition by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, which contested an advisory from the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting that prohibited the documentary's release. The company argued that the advisory lacked a specific legal basis.
Background of the Lawrence Of Punjab Controversy
Initially set to premiere on April 27, 2026, the series faced a halt after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued an advisory on April 24, instructing Zee5 not to air the documentary. This decision followed concerns from the Punjab Police. Additionally, Ludhiana MP Raja Warring filed a petition claiming that 'Lawrence Of Punjab' glorifies the jailed gangster and could have a detrimental impact on younger audiences. Authorities expressed worries that the content might disrupt law and order in Punjab.
The Punjab Advocate-General opposed the documentary's release in its current form, asserting that it glorifies the alleged gangster. He noted that the Punjab government had already taken steps to remove over 2,600 social media posts related to gangster glorification. In contrast, Zee5 argued that 'Lawrence Of Punjab' does not glorify Bishnoi but rather explores the student political landscape that facilitated the emergence of gangsters like him, contending that the objections were based solely on the trailer. Subsequently, Zee5 sought relief from the Delhi High Court to safeguard its right to stream the documentary.
