Prithviraj Addresses Future of Empuraan
During a recent press conference in Kochi, Prithviraj Sukumaran tackled the ongoing rumors regarding the next installment of the Empuraan series. The director of L2: Empuraan, featuring Mohanlal, was questioned about whether previous controversies surrounding the film would deter him from pursuing a third part. Prithviraj emphasized that such controversies have never swayed his creative choices and reaffirmed his dedication to the project. Nonetheless, he acknowledged that logistical issues, including scheduling conflicts and prior obligations, could impact the timeline for production.
Speculation Surrounding Empuraan 3
Prithviraj Sukumaran expressed that despite varying opinions on the film, his passion for storytelling remains steadfast. He clarified that external criticism does not dictate his filmmaking decisions. He believes that creative choices should stem from conviction rather than societal pressure. Even after facing backlash for L2: Empuraan, he noted that audience interest in the franchise continues to thrive, with many approaching him out of curiosity about the third installment.
While he confirmed his intention to proceed with Empuraan 3, Prithviraj highlighted practical challenges that may postpone production. A significant factor is the availability of Mohanlal, whose schedule must be coordinated before moving forward. Additionally, he mentioned his existing commitments to other projects that need to be fulfilled before he can concentrate on the next chapter of the franchise. L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj and featuring Mohanlal, became one of the most discussed Malayalam films of 2025, not only for its box office performance but also due to the controversies it sparked. The film faced criticism for its portrayal of events reminiscent of the 2002 Gujarat riots, leading to objections from certain groups and calls for a boycott. In response to the backlash, the filmmakers made several edits, including 24 cuts and modifications to character names.
Prithviraj on Political Themes in Cinema
In the same discussion, Prithviraj was asked about his views on participating in films with political themes. He clarified that he is not particularly inclined towards projects that focus solely on political messages. However, he stated that if political elements are integral to the narrative and enhance the story, he is open to being part of such films.
Prithviraj also reflected on his recent cameo in Pallichattambi, where he portrayed Kunjambu Nambiar Patel. He mentioned that audience feedback regarding his brief role has been overwhelmingly positive. The film features Tovino Thomas in the lead role. Looking ahead, Prithviraj is set to appear in SS Rajamouli's Varanasi, which stars Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra in prominent roles.
