In a revealing discussion, Parvin Dabas shared his thoughts on the ongoing censorship debate in India. The controversy surrounding The Kerala Story 2 has captured significant attention, especially after the Kerala High Court lifted a stay on its release. A petition had been filed against the film's censor certificate, alleging that it misrepresents Kerala and its inhabitants while perpetuating negative stereotypes. Dabas stated, “I oppose censorship but support a grading system. It should be stricter. If someone wants to watch a film, they will. If they seek out poor content, it’s available online. We need to avoid creating content that could hurt someone's sentiments. There have been numerous instances of this, and it needs to stop.”

The Role of Filmmakers

Furthermore, Dabas highlighted the responsibility filmmakers have towards society, stating, “They should avoid creating content that seems to target specific groups, as that is also inappropriate. A proper grading system should be established for adult content and beyond. Instead of censorship, we should enhance our rating system.”

Art and Politics Should Remain Separate

Filmmaking shouldn’t become a political tool: Parvin Dabas

Parvin Dabas believes that politics should not interfere with artistic expression. He referenced the American film rating system, explaining, “In the U.S., films with violence or sexual themes receive an R rating. Filmmaking should not be politicized; it is a matter of responsibility from all perspectives.” Dabas’ upcoming film, Khosla Ka Ghosla 2, features a talented cast, including Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Ranvir Shorey, Tara Sharma, Harsh Chhaya, and Ravi Kishan in key roles.
