Parvathy Thiruvothu Reflects on Kasaba Controversy and Future Projects
Parvathy Thiruvothu's Bold Stance on Misogyny in Cinema
Parvathy Thiruvothu has gained recognition for her fearless opinions and unique film selections, establishing herself as one of the most adaptable actresses in the industry. A pivotal moment in her career was her critique of the film Kasaba, which starred the iconic Malayalam actor Mammootty. She highlighted a particular scene that she deemed misogynistic, questioning the superstar's choice to deliver such a line. This led to considerable backlash against her, but she has now addressed the incident in an exclusive interview with a media outlet.
Parvathy Discusses the Kasaba Backlash: 'I Became a Massive Hit'
In 2017, after voicing her concerns about the sexist dialogue in Kasaba during the International Film Festival of Kerala, Parvathy faced severe online harassment, including abusive messages and threats. She criticized a line from Mammootty's character, a police officer, who made a disturbing remark about a female colleague. While her comments drew criticism from some fans, many others supported her stance against misogyny in films. Following the incident, she even lodged a police report regarding the online bullying she experienced.
Reflecting on her journey after the controversy, Parvathy stated, "Twenty days after my comments, I realized it transcended my personal experience; it was about all women. No one could script the universe better than this. I received support from men who recognized that this was about a woman expressing her opinion and standing firm." She noted that the audience's appreciation for her performance in the film Uyare in 2019 was a testament to this shift.
Parvathy remarked, "I became a massive hit," emphasizing that while the Malayalam audience may initially disagree with an opinion, they will commend an actor's talent if it shines through. When questioned about her past statements, she expressed, "I don't dwell on the past. If I made an error, I am willing to apologize."
