Outrage Follows Sonam Wangchuk's Removal During Hunger Strike
Sonam Wangchuk's Removal Sparks Controversy
In a surprising incident, activist Sonam Wangchuk was taken away by Delhi Police from Jantar Mantar on Sunday while he was on a hunger strike supporting the ongoing student protests. Footage captured the moment he was escorted from the location under tight security. The police later clarified that this action was executed following directives from the High Court and medical advice due to Wangchuk's declining health. He has since been moved to the emergency unit at Safdarjung Hospital. This controversial removal has ignited significant backlash online, with numerous Bollywood figures expressing their discontent.
Bollywood Celebrities Express Their Anger
Sonakshi Sinha, a prominent supporter of Wangchuk, refrained from commenting on the latest developments but shared a video featuring a female protester discussing Wangchuk's alleged forced removal.
Actor Prakash Raj, who had previously visited Jantar Mantar to show his support, expressed his outrage through a strong statement criticizing the government. He shared a video from the protest site, stating, "The world is witnessing a cowardly government that refuses to engage in dialogue with the youth and instead acts like dictators. Forcibly removing @wangchuksworld and disrupting the peaceful student protest is a sign of fear. What a disgrace!"Zayn Marie, Aamir Khan's niece, also voiced her disapproval regarding Wangchuk's removal, stating, "This transcends personal politics. It is an affront to our great nation. The government and police are meant to serve us, not control us."
Actress Nafisa Ali shared a famous excerpt from Jawaharlal Nehru's "Tryst with Destiny" speech, stating, "Today, India has a significant moment dedicated to its future." In another post, she expressed her support, saying, "Praying for Mr. Sonam Wangchuk. You are indomitable. India needs you."
In response, the Delhi Police stated, "While adhering to the orders of the Hon’ble High Court, the protestors attempted to create a disturbance, leading to a minor commotion. However, the police exercised maximum restraint and ensured the operation was conducted safely." They urged the protestors at Jantar Mantar to vacate the area peacefully as soon as possible.
