Omi Vaidya Advocates for Sonam Wangchuk Amid Hunger Strike
Omi Vaidya Supports Sonam Wangchuk's Cause
Omi Vaidya, renowned for his portrayal of Chatur Ramalingam in 3 Idiots, has voiced his support for Sonam Wangchuk, an education reform advocate and climate activist, urging the public to pay heed to Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar. Wangchuk served as the inspiration for Aamir Khan's character, Rancho, in 3 Idiots. He is the founder of the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) and is recognized for his innovative educational reforms and sustainable engineering practices. Drawing parallels with the beloved character from the film, Omi reminded his followers of Wangchuk's significant contributions. Currently, Wangchuk's health is declining as he continues his indefinite hunger strike, which has garnered national attention.
Omi Vaidya Highlights Wangchuk's Influence
In a heartfelt video shared on social media, Omi expressed his concerns, stating, "I don't want Funsukh Wangdu to die." He introduced himself as "Chatur from 3 Idiots" and emphasized the importance of Wangchuk's message. He reminded viewers that Aamir Khan's character was based on Wangchuk, whom he described as a remarkable engineer, educator, and innovator. Omi characterized Wangchuk as "humble" and "impressive," sharing that he has met him and respects his efforts in education and social reform.
Concerns Over Sonam Wangchuk's Health
Omi expressed worry about Wangchuk's health, noting that his blood sugar levels have dropped significantly during the fast. He questioned whether the situation was receiving adequate public and media attention. "He stood up for students and for change. Today, he needs our support," Omi stated in his video. He explained that Wangchuk's protest addresses critical issues related to education, Ladakh's autonomy, and environmental concerns. While opinions on the demands may vary, Omi emphasized that no one wishes to see Wangchuk's health decline.
Reasons Behind Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike
Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike for over two weeks, reportedly losing nearly 9 kg since the start of his fast. He joined the Cockroach Janta Party's protest on June 28, which began on June 20, focusing on alleged irregularities in the NEET exam and broader issues within India's education system. The protesters are calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and compensation for families of students who have tragically taken their lives following the examination controversy.
